For those of you that have been out and about all weekend, you may have missed the dropping of Lada Gaga and Beyonce’s new video for Telephone. While I generally let the primped video posturings of the day’s pop stars float across my consciousness like an ignored flock of birds on the horizon, this one was absolutely riveting.
There is definitely artistic genius to this video. It manages to further push the hyper-stylized images of both Gaga and Beyonce to new heights whilst simultaneously dragging product placement and cross-promotion to a new low. One can only imagine the conversations that shoehorned the likes of Virgin Mobile, Coke, D&G, Kraft, and Beats by Dre into the ten minutes of technicolor tableaus and jerky choreography that make up the video. Even Plenty of Fish manages to sneak itself in there, making an attempt at classy classlessness.
Anyway. To balance out the blatant promotion of pop culture in this post, I’ve also included two underground bangers as a postscript. Enjoy.
