Well the votes are in but DESIGNER DRUGS did not win the Mariah Carey remix contest hosted by Indaba. The New Yorkers earned themselves a “Honourable Mention” as a fast paced, energetic club remix, but with a vocal that was sped up just a little too much. I can agree with the judges, the vocal did sound a little strange… but it’s all part of the energy.
After listening to the winning track, it’s sad to say that the judges went with something even more plain and boring than the original ‘I’ll Be Loving U Long Time.’ At least in a remix contest, you’d assume they’d spice it up and go for something that sounds different than the original? Wrong. You can listen to it over here (congrats to the winners and no offense, but seriously guys… shit is formulaic).
Although, when I first heard about this contest and started browsing through all the remixes, I knew DESIGNER DRUGS wasn’t going to win. I knew it would have nothing to do with the remix, just due to the judges — they all seem to be industry insiders directly related to Carey meaning the sound that they’re looking for is something that’s going to get radio play. DESIGNER DRUGS just could not compete with mediocre hip-hop beats.
I just think it’s a very sad story considering DESIGNER DRUGS’ intentions. They weren’t in it for the $5000 or the M-Box… they just wanted to be top friends with the 38 year old pop mogul for a whole month. Unfortunately, all they got was an autographed copy of E=MC2. Jealous? I am.
Anyways the remix is on point with loads of energy as Mark Sudack (Mariah’s co-manager and producer) mentioned who seemed to overlook the rearrangement of the vox. Gotta love glitch.
For some reason we have two copies of the remix — a radio and extended edit. I think it’s a little strange considering that the extended is only 29 seconds longer than the radio but what the hell, take em both!

That’s one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read.
What is your problem Why? If your going to make comments on a music blog, at least make them about the music and not the author’s choice of diction. Perhaps you really are upset you didn’t get a signed copy of M=MC2 (pathetic). Back to the Music, I’m always a fan of designer drugs and I will continue to love them even though they didn’t win. Maybe even more.
