Love Lockdown

12Sep08

Three days ago Mr. West dropped his new track ‘Love Lockdown’ on his own blog. The single is off his new ablum “808′s & Heartbreak” set for a December 16th release. Gotta say I’m looking forward to this album, “Graduation” was fucking awesome — and I like Kanye about as much as he likes the paparazzi.

That being said this song is pretty different. Kanye has embraced the auto-tune like many others in the pop/rap genre. Kinda of reminds me of 40s soul music though. Sounds like Nina Simone to me — an emotional song about love with a simple production. Anyone else feel it?

Nina Simone? That’s quite a stretch…truthfully I think Kanye West is one of the most influential figures in music this decade and I’m a big fan of most of his work, but Love Lockdown is his most disappointing track to date. I mean, if you’re into the whole auto-tune-replacing-actual-good-voices thing in contemporary rap and R&B, then yeah, it’s hot. So are you, like, into Yung Berg? Seriously this song sucks. And for the record, Nina Simone sang from the late 50s to the 70s, not the 40s.

i’d say kanye’s good… but definitely not influential. his sounds are generally other hot genres, re worked and with a rap vocal on it.

dont get me wrong, i like, it works, and is good… but i’d never call it influential.

I love Mr. West, he just sweetens my ears. OK, Nina Simone started in the 50′s but IT does sound like a track from her… so what! I don’t mean it in a negative way. that’s just how West makes art…he collages like a mother fucker!…is super inspiring to me.
I heard this Nina Simone tune at a movie call the Thomas Crown Affair (Sinnerman). Is not the same, but the essence is there, and what West did is masterful. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vr2vA88rHj0 (copy-paste)
I love that is not rap. I love so many kinds of music, so I have no problem with the rap, but IS Just Nice to get that kind of variety from him.
Just my 50cents on this subject!!!!
    PEACE!
