Hasta Luego, Soundboy

Groove Armada

Last week I had some family come through town, so it was an appropriate time to clean up. Doing so, I found my copy of Groove Armada’s Soundboy Rock. It had been a long time since I had given this album a good listening too, and was reintroduced to the mysticism of Big Beat and Groove Armada.

Sometimes the electronic genre can be very boring. Various styles of music have known to become popular and then dragged out by every single new DJ/producer. This is not Groove Armada. They employ a new style not just every album, but almost every track. Soundboy Rock offers some funky and vocal vocal house, indie, reggae, minimal electronica, down-tempo jazz and even some folk-esque ballads.

Some of my lesser known favourites The Girls Say, Lightsonic and Drop That Thing all have some foul ass bass with rap, reggae and funk vocals respectively.

Of course, the singles off Soundboy Rock are just as great for the same reason. Song 4 Mutya (Out of Control) featuring Mutya Buena of Sugababes helped accelerate the female artists solo career. Kissy Sell Out’s reworking of the track is just brilliant.

The first single Get Down was also very popular. It spawned what was to become one of my favourite music videos, directed by the group Pleix (the same guys who gave us that Vitalic Birdz video).
